Hal blinked in the sunlight. He'd wanted to do this indoors, but the camera he was using didn't work so well in low light.

His Sandile and trusty lab assistant, Doctor, trained the camera on him, and Hal cleared his throat. What did his grandpa always say...? "Behold!" he yelled, then cringed. Too loud. Now people were looking at him.

But wasn't that what he wanted?

He stared at the ground, muttered "I made a new Pokemon out of my Porygon," and released a Porygon-Z from its Pokeball.

Greetings. I am detective Naoto Shirogane. May I ask what you meant by 'making a new Pokemon'?

A.. response? Maybe Hal wasn't a terrible, horrible person who everyone hated even in the Pokemon world where nobody knew him after all!

Or it was a pity response. Yeah, that was probably it. But he'd take it.

He motioned for Doctor to focus the camera on Mesh. "He used to be a Porygon, but I hacked into him and now he's a... something else!"

[For what it's worth, Naoto seemed genuinely interested at least.]

You hacked into him? How did you hack into a living creature? [Apparently this world was more different from his own than he had even thought.]

Hal remained completely oblivious to Naoto's interest. Though that didn't stop him from going on.

"Most of them are living creatures I think," he said, "but Porygons are made of data. He had really bad graphics so I fixed him! And I made him stronger too!"

Impressive. [So Pokemon weren't quite like powered up versions of animals. Naoto would have to try this himself, though of course he would need to find the proper test subject first.]

What did this Porygon look like before your alteration?

"It looked like a thing from the 90s before they discovered how to make curves," said Hal. He took the camera from his Sandile and fiddled with it for a second, and brought up a picture of a Porygon in the top right corner of the video. "Like that!"

Quite a difference. It resembles something out of an old-school video game. [He had played a few in his youth.]

"Yeah, really old school!" said Hal, who was from the 2030s. "So I put it into the computer and hacked it to make it cooler. I tried it with Doctor..." he indicated his offscreen Sandile, "but it didn't... uh, it didn't work."

[So it wouldn't work with the living Pokemon.]

Did this upgrade influence anything other than your Pokemon's appearance? [If one could hack into a Pokemon and change their appearance, what was preventing them from changing stats?]

"Oh, yeah!" said Hal. He'd nearly forgotten. "I changed some numbers... He's stronger now so I think some of them were stats... I think I changed a move too, but it's not a move he has it's just a move he can learn." He scratched his head. "All the moves were just numbers, so I think they're just array indices and the moves are stored somewhere else, like in a big uniform Pokemon move array!"

He was glad to have somebody to talk about this with. It was really interesting. Even his brother would probably have been interested enough not to tell him to stop yet. Maybe.

Naoto nods. "One could say that you created a new Pokemon evolutionary stage. Will you be reporting to the Professor?" She would probably love to hear about this.

"Professor?" Hal repeated. "What professor? What does he study? Is it Pokemon?"

He could have read the newspapers, listened to the radio, or watched TV during his stay in Nimbasa. But none of those things were the Internet. So he hadn't.

"Professor Juniper," Naoto replied, the fact that Hal had assumed the professor to be male not sliding past him. It seemed like Hal's world was similar to the one Naoto had come from. "She studies the origins of Pokemon, or so I have heard."

Hal widened his eyes. "Really?" It hadn't occurred to him that someone else might be studying Pokemon, an actual adult. He guessed the resources he'd been studying from had to have been written by someone. "Where does she live?"

"Yes," Naoto replied, smiling a bit. It was good to see children so interested in science. Usually they would much rather fool around. "She resides in Nuvema Town."

Hal deflated. "Aw, that's..."

Then he remembered that that was the one other place he could warp. "Awesome!"

He wasn't actually going to talk to this professor person, of course. He was just a kid. But maybe he could ask someone in Numeva Town about what she was doing...?
