The people here have competitions for their pokemon- battle is one, contests are the other. Badges for are earned for battles and ribbons in contests.

Meanwhile, the Swablu will continue to investigate for a moment or so, before perching herself on Otogi's head, pleased.]

My own team are scattered about the town; I let them explore a bit. [Otogi is a good team leader.]

Ahh, I see. I'm honestly at a bit of a loss as to what to do, since... [Well, just got here and all, and with no clue what on earth to even do... Yeah, getting home's the priority, but...]

Well, in all honesty, there'd be no use sitting around. If I really want to go home, I should actively try--that's the way I see it, anyway.

Could you explain a little more about the battles and contests things you mentioned earlier?

Hnnn... For a battle, I could easily demonstrate; the Gym is not far from here. If you like, you could watch.

Contests however, are typically attended by pokemon breeders. They place importance on raising pokemon, keeping them well groomed, and so on. They focus not on actual battling so much as the other qualities they may have.
